Experiences of Asian and Asian American Hunter College Students During COVID-19

As COVID-19 cases increase across the country, so have reports from Asians and Asian Americans experiencing microaggressions, racial profiling, hate incidents and in some cases, hate violence. Many others have also reported heightened fears and anxiety about the possibility of being a target of a hate incident. Many communities of color and other vulnerable populations, including Asian and Asian American communities, have experienced multiple stressors in this difficult time.

Hunter College AANAPISI Project (HCAP) would like to learn more about the experiences and needs of Hunter College students who identify as Asian and/or Asian American-- including those who identify as East Asian, South Asian, Southeast Asian, Central Asian and/or West Asian. This survey will inform HCAP’s programming and Asian American Studies course offerings. More importantly, your responses support our efforts to educate campus partners about Asian and Asian American student experiences and effectively advocate for culturally-relevant services. HCAP will connect this work with broader efforts to address disparities across communities of color and other vulnerable populations.

To report anti-Asian harassment or discrimination in NYC, call 311, the New York Attorney General's Hate Crimes Hotline (1-800-771-7755) or visit the Asian American Federation’s Reporting Website.

If you are experiencing distress, we encourage you to review the mental health resources included at the end of the survey.  You can also call 1-888-NYC-Well (692-9355) for support. To learn more about community mental health resources, students can also schedule a 1:1 resource consultation with HCAP’s Mental Health Coordinator, Dr. Marcia Liu: ml2138@hunter.cuny.edu.
