Congratulations on your acceptance to Hunter College CUNY! We are delighted to invite you to be considered for the Project FRESH (First-year Retention & Equity in STEM at Hunter) STEM Scholars program. We are sponsored by a National Science Foundation - Hispanic Serving Institution grant and our goal is to ensure that all students, regardless of their experience prior to college, have the academic and social supports needed to successfully transition from high school to Chemistry and Biology majors at Hunter. We are especially interested in providing culturally-responsive programs for scholars who identify from groups that are underrepresented in STEM (i.e. Hispanic/Latinx, Black) and others from underserved populations who have historically faced challenges in their first year of college.

Benefits:
  • Assignment to a First-year STEM advisor and 1:1 advisement meetings
  • A built-in community of fellow first-year "Freshies" and Peer Mentors
  • Access to specialized STEM academic support services and study skills workshops
  • Activities that embrace both cultural and academic identities (i.e. Latinas in STEM affinity groups)
  • Opportunity to provide feedback that will improve the STEM student experience at Hunter.

General Eligibility:
  • Freshmen entering Hunter College in Fall 2023 (not transferring from another College)
  • Enrolling as a full-time student in Fall 2023
  • Enrolling in General Chemistry 1 (CHEM 102) this academic year as requirement for your intended science major

Freshmen in any of the following groups are highly encouraged to apply:
  • Identify from a group that is underrepresented in STEM (Hispanic/Latinx, Black/African American, Native American/Indigenous, Pacific Islander)
  • First-generation college students
  • From other underserved communities that may experience challenges transitioning to college
  • Students who are not starting college as part of another cohort/scholar/honors program at Hunter
